Mechanical practice should help you understand why a system behaves as described. Begin by identifying the parts, the input or force and the relationship being tested. Use only the information and idealisations supplied by the task. Extra assumptions can make an otherwise reasonable explanation unsuitable.

When reviewing an original item, describe the mechanism in words before looking at the answer explanation. If your explanation depends on remembering how a picture looked, it may not transfer to a different arrangement. The goal is a principle you can recognise when orientation, labels or irrelevant details change.

Keep conceptual and visual errors separate. You may understand a relationship but trace the wrong component in a crowded diagram. Conversely, you may track the drawing accurately but misunderstand the physical principle. Use simpler learning material for the second problem and a deliberate visual-tracing routine for the first. Timed repetition is most helpful after you know which of these problems you are addressing.

Reading: use the passage, not outside experience

Reading practice should train precise use of the supplied text. Identify whether the task asks for a stated fact, a supported conclusion or the correct application of an instruction. Those are different demands. An answer can sound sensible in real life while going beyond the passage.

Pay attention to conditions, exceptions and sequence words. A procedure that applies only after a particular check should not be treated as the first action in every situation. Marking those relationships mentally can be more valuable than rereading the whole passage without a purpose.

When reviewing, locate the sentence or relationship that supports your choice. If you cannot identify it, ask whether you relied on experience or on an assumption. Practise summarising a paragraph’s purpose in a few words, then return to the specific evidence needed. This keeps comprehension active while reducing unnecessary rereading. Add timing gradually so that faster scanning does not become a habit of skipping conditions.

For assembly, track the relationships between parts and identify stable features that remain meaningful when orientation changes. Avoid jumping to a pattern after noticing one attractive feature. A useful visual rule must explain all the required changes, not just the most obvious one. Check orientation, position, number and shading only when they are relevant to the original exercise; do not force every task into a memorised checklist of tricks.

After an incorrect attempt, name the visual feature you missed. After a correct attempt, check whether the method was reliable or a guess. Review time also matters: an accurate but lengthy search may need a better starting cue. Keep assembly and figural sessions labelled separately so that improvement in one does not conceal a weakness in the other.

Diagrams and rules: keep symbols and conditions explicit

TECH preparation benefits from careful diagram and rule handling. Read the legend before tracing connections. Identify the specific output requested and follow only the paths needed to establish it. A diagram can look familiar while assigning a different meaning to a symbol you have seen elsewhere.

For written rules, separate required conditions, alternatives and exceptions. Translate a dense statement into a short logical sequence before choosing a response. Check the final choice against the original wording so that your simplification has not removed an important restriction.

Review a mistake at the point where the reasoning changed direction. Did you misread a symbol, overlook a condition or carry forward a conclusion that had not been established? Use a separate label for uncertain correct answers. Guessing correctly should not remove a skill from your study plan. Similarly, do not let one difficult exercise dominate your impression of an entire battery. Look across several relevant first attempts, with timing conditions recorded, before changing your preparation focus. The aim is a better process, not a flattering dashboard.
