Start with the battery, not the industry label

EEI stands for Edison Electric Institute. The important candidate distinction is between the organisation and the particular battery an employer has selected. A battery groups assessments around a job family. Preparing for the broad idea of an electric utility test can leave you practising material that is irrelevant to your appointment.

Treat this EEI Test Guide as a routing document. Find the full assessment name in your invitation, then compare it with the employer’s current preparation materials. If only an abbreviation appears, ask the testing contact to confirm it. Keep the version label as well as the acronym, especially when the invitation refers to an operator battery.

Separate the assessment from the rest of recruitment. An application review, interview, background check or other skills assessment does not become part of EEI merely because the same utility administers it. CAST: construction and skilled-trades preparation

CAST is the construction and skilled-trades route in the EEI family. Its broad preparation map includes graphic arithmetic, mechanical concepts, reading for comprehension and mathematical usage. The employer’s current description should establish the form and session arrangements; an old brochure is not a reliable appointment schedule.

Start by separating two kinds of numerical work. Arithmetic performed on written quantities is different from extracting the correct measurement from a drawing before calculating. A candidate may be comfortable with fractions yet lose accuracy when a dimension label is overlooked. Keep those errors in different categories when reviewing practice.

Mechanical preparation should emphasise explaining a relationship rather than memorising a picture. Reading preparation should emphasise the instructions supplied in a passage rather than personal experience on a job site. Relevant experience can make material feel familiar, but familiarity should not replace the evidence presented in the task. MASS and POSS: related foundations, different routes

MASS is associated with power-plant maintenance, while POSS is associated with plant-operator selection. Their names are not interchangeable. Shared preparation in reading, mechanical understanding and mathematical usage can be useful, but it does not justify treating either result or simulated test as equivalent to the other.

A current Dominion Energy description distinguishes MASS object-assembly work from POSS figural reasoning. That distinction matters when choosing spatial practice. Mentally assembling parts and detecting a visual relationship involve different routines, even when both appear to be picture-based exercises. Use the exercise labels in the material supplied for your application.

If you are applying for both maintenance and operator positions, maintain two preparation records. Reuse foundational learning where it genuinely overlaps, then switch to the appropriate route for timed rehearsal. Record which battery each session was intended to support. A blended percentage across both routes hides the information you need to decide what to practise next.

TECH: diagrams, rules and technical reasoning

TECH is the technician-occupations route. The section names listed by Dominion Energy include graphic problem solving, interpreting diagrams, mechanical concepts and reasoning from rules. These labels suggest different reading habits, not simply a harder version of general arithmetic.

For diagram interpretation, begin with the legend and identify what each mark means in that particular display. For rule-based work, distinguish conditions that must all apply from alternatives where one condition is sufficient. A rushed response can be logically consistent yet based on a rule the task never supplied.

Technical experience is useful background, but original practice should train careful application of the given information. Do not import a familiar workplace convention into an unfamiliar schematic without checking the legend. Prepare a repeatable routine: locate the requested output, identify relevant inputs, apply the stated relation, then check the result against every constraint. SO/PD II and other employer-selected assessments

SO/PD II refers to a system-operator and power-dispatching route. Dominion Energy lists analytic thinking, mathematical usage, reading and a task-management simulation. The last component is an important boundary for preparation: a static page cannot recreate a live, changing multitasking environment.

You can still train useful foundations. Practise extracting priorities from written rules, checking numerical information and returning to a task without losing your place. Label that work as foundational preparation rather than claiming it duplicates the official simulation. Only an appropriately configured interactive product should be described as practising simultaneous task demands.

Customer-service and administrative vacancies may use other assessments, including tests from different providers. A utility’s careers page may discuss them alongside EEI materials. Do not infer that a typing exercise, personality questionnaire or virtual job tryout belongs to the same battery. Ask for the exact product name before purchasing specialist preparation or assuming that a previous result applies.

Read timing and format information correctly

Three different times may appear in your preparation: the appointment duration, the time allowed for a section and the deadline for completing a recruitment step. Keep them separate. An appointment can include check-in, instructions and breaks, so dividing its total length by an assumed question count produces a misleading pace target.

Use current employer instructions to confirm location, device requirements, permitted aids and navigation. Do not assume that a calculator, scratch paper or the ability to return to an earlier item will be available. Practise without optional aids until you know what is permitted, then rehearse under the confirmed conditions.

Older public descriptions can help identify a battery’s purpose but should not override your invitation. If two sources disagree, make a short list of the conflicting details and ask the testing contact. This is especially useful when a preparation page refers to paper materials while your appointment describes a computer-based setting. Resolve the practical difference before test day.

Build a battery-specific preparation workflow

A useful preparation plan has a clear route, a small diagnostic and a review cycle. Begin with the named battery rather than running a general collection of utility questions. After practice, distinguish a knowledge gap from an execution error. Forgetting how a ratio works needs a short lesson and untimed work. Selecting the wrong row in a table needs a scanning routine. Compare like with like when reviewing progress. A timed first attempt and an untimed repeat attempt do not measure the same thing. A MASS spatial session and a TECH rules session should not be combined into a single readiness claim. Keep the battery, module, timing condition and attempt history visible.

Before an appointment, focus on decisions you can control: correct route, familiar instructions, reliable methods and practical arrangements.
