Testgrid Cognitive Ability Practice Questions

Testgrid’s catalogue spans several cognitive domains and publisher products. A responsible practice set labels the construct instead of implying that one invented battery is official.

Map the invitation before choosing questions.

A mixed set may include numerical, verbal and abstract reasoning only when those domains are actually assigned.

Do not copy sample-centre or publisher items.

Use original values, wording and diagrams.

Review results by domain and error cause.

Original numerical data example

Suppose a service team closes 360 cases and 45 are reopened. The reopened share is 45 divided by 360, which equals 0.125 or 12.5 percent.

Write the relationship before calculating: part divided by whole.

Check whether the question asks for a percentage, percentage-point difference or percentage change.

Do not divide by an unrelated total.

Use a calculator only if the assigned instructions permit one.

A changed dataset should still trigger the same method.

Original ratio and rate example

A machine produces 84 parts in 3.5 hours. The hourly rate is 84 divided by 3.5, or 24 parts. At the same rate, 6 hours would produce 144 parts.

Separate rate from total and keep units visible.

Estimate first: the answer should be a little under 30 per hour.

Do not multiply when the task asks for a unit rate.

Check whether conditions are stated to remain constant.

Practise with changed units so the method transfers.

Original verbal inference example

Passage: “All audited files have an owner. Some archived files are audited.” It follows that some archived files have an owner. It does not follow that every archived file is audited.

Translate each statement into a set relationship.

Choose only conclusions forced by the passage.

Do not add assumptions about normal business practice.

Watch quantifiers such as all and some.

Explain why each rejected option overreaches or reverses the evidence.

Original abstract sequence example

Imagine a square marker moving clockwise through four corners while its fill alternates black and white. After a white marker at the lower-left corner, the next figure is black at the upper-left corner.

Track location and fill as separate rules.

Eliminate options that satisfy only one transformation.

Do not select by overall resemblance.

State the rule before viewing choices when possible.

Use fresh shapes and step lengths during review.

Original diagrammatic process example

A process sends triangles left and circles right, then changes every outlined shape to filled. An outlined triangle exits left as a filled triangle.

Apply rules in the stated order.

Create a two-column record for route and transformation.

Do not combine steps mentally when a written trace is clearer.

Test the rule with a second input.

If an option violates one stage, reject it even if the final shape looks familiar.

Original mechanical relationship example

Three equal gears mesh in a straight line. The second rotates opposite the first, and the third rotates opposite the second; therefore the first and third rotate in the same direction.

Count each contact as one reversal.

Draw a direction arrow beside every gear.

Do not infer speed differences when gear sizes are equal.

State any assumption supplied by the question.

Change the number or size of gears to test understanding.

Review checklist

  1. Original verbal inference example: Explain why each rejected option overreaches or reverses the evidence.
  2. Original abstract sequence example: Use fresh shapes and step lengths during review.
  3. Original diagrammatic process example: If an option violates one stage, reject it even if the final shape looks familiar.
  4. Original mechanical relationship example: Change the number or size of gears to test understanding.
  5. Timed practice and review: Stop when practice quality falls; more volume is not automatically better.

Timed practice and review

Many Testgrid cognitive assessments are timed, but exact limits vary. Short drills should use the confirmed format and preserve enough time to learn from errors.

Record correct, incorrect, skipped and unseen items.

Review whether the issue was knowledge, method, reading or pacing.

Do not use a high score from repeated items as readiness evidence.

Retest with new content after reviewing the method.

A worked method review

After a practice set, reconstruct each solution without looking at the original explanation. For a numerical problem, write the quantities, units and operation. For a verbal problem, identify the exact supporting sentence. For an abstract or diagrammatic problem, describe every transformation in order. This checks whether the method can transfer to a new item.

Tag each miss with one primary cause. Useful tags include concept gap, incorrect operation, missed qualifier, incomplete visual rule, careless transcription and time-management choice. Avoid a vague “hard question” category because it does not identify a correction. If two causes contributed, record the first error that changed the outcome.

Create a fresh parallel question rather than immediately repeating the same item. Change the values, context, sequence length or visual feature while preserving the reasoning operation. A correct answer on the variation is stronger evidence of learning than recognition of an answer that has already been explained.

For timed tests, compare accuracy before and after the point where pace increases. A sharp late decline may indicate fatigue or rushed reading rather than weak knowledge. Use shorter timed sets to practise that transition, then retest with an unseen mixed set using the invitation’s confirmed rules.

Keep domain scores separate. Ten strong verbal answers should not hide repeated numerical denominator errors, and a good abstract result should not compensate for misunderstood mechanical principles during preparation. The employer may combine evidence differently, but learning decisions need enough detail to be actionable.

Finish the review by writing one method cue for the next session, such as “percentage change uses the original value” or “test every visual feature across all transitions.” Keep cues short enough to recall before practice, then remove them during the final unaided set.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Testgrid assessment?

Testgrid is a broad assessment platform and provider. An employer may assign aptitude, behavioural, emotional-intelligence, skills, safety or role-specific assessments, sometimes from named publisher ranges.

Are Testgrid assessments timed?

Testgrid says many assessments are timed, but not all. The exact time condition depends on the named assessment and employer configuration, so the invitation and live instructions control.
