What is the Situational Judgement Test (SJT)?

The SJT presents real-world scenarios related to medical professionalism, patient care, teamwork, and ethical dilemmas. For each scenario, you’ll be asked to:

  • Rate how appropriate a particular response is
  • Judge the importance of different actions
  • Select the best or worst response to a situation

This section is not about technical knowledge — it’s about demonstrating mature judgment and understanding NHS core values.

Situational Judgement Scoring

Unlike other UCAT sections, SJT is scored in Bands (1 to 4). Band 1 reflects excellent judgment closely aligned with medical professionals, while Band 4 indicates significant misunderstanding of appropriate behavior.

Tips for Situational Judgement Success

  • Think like a medical student: Focus on patient safety, honesty, and teamwork
  • Don’t be extreme: Avoid choosing “Very appropriate” or “Very inappropriate” unless truly justified
  • Stay professional: Always prioritize ethical actions over convenience or personal feelings
